Religious Trauma Therapy
Religious Trauma Therapy in Southfield, Michigan
Faith communities can be places of belonging, meaning, and hope. For some people, they also become places of fear, shame, control, or harm. If your experiences with religion have left you anxious, confused, guilty, or disconnected from yourself, you are not alone, and what you feel makes sense. I offer religious trauma therapy in person at my Southfield, Michigan office and online throughout the state.
What Is Religious Trauma?
Religious trauma describes the lasting emotional effects of harmful religious experiences. It can come from rigid or fear-based teaching, spiritual abuse by a leader, being shunned or judged by a congregation, having your identity condemned, or growing up in a home where faith was used to control. Its effects often show up long after you leave a particular church or setting.
Signs You May Be Carrying Religious Trauma
- Persistent guilt, shame, or fear of punishment
- Anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts tied to religious beliefs
- Difficulty trusting your own judgment, feelings, or body
- Grief over lost community, family relationships, or a sense of certainty
- Confusion about identity, sexuality, purpose, or values
- Strong reactions to religious places, language, music, or people
My Approach
As a therapist who has also served as a pastor and chaplain, I understand religious life from the inside. That experience helps me listen without judgment and without an agenda. Our work is not about pushing you toward or away from faith. Some clients want to rebuild a healthier spiritual life, some are redefining what they believe, and some are stepping away entirely. Each path is respected here.
Together we slow down, name what happened, and untangle the messages you absorbed from who you actually are. Using trauma-informed and evidence-based tools, including cognitive behavioral strategies, emotional regulation skills, and meaning-centered work, we focus on reducing shame and fear, reconnecting you with your own voice, and helping you move forward with clarity.

This includes people who have left a high-control church, people still in their faith who are hurting, LGBTQ+ individuals harmed by religious rejection, and Black clients navigating the intersection of faith, family, culture, and racial stress.
